GPS INTERFERENCE: EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN SEA

Published: 10 May 2018

The US Maritime Administration (MARAD) have issued an alert about a number of instances of GPS interference in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea since 18 March 2018.  In particular, this is centred around Port Said, the Suez Canal in Egypt and the southern area of the Republic of Cyprus.  The interference can lead to bridge navigation and communication systems being adversely affected.

Ships are advised to exercise caution in this area making sure that they keep a close eye on ECDIS and other navigation equipment and use alternative methods to make sure that the equipment has not been affected by GPS interference.

They are also encouraged to report any GPS disruption to the US Coast Guard Navigation Centre (NAVCEN).  NAVCEN can be contacted at:  https://go.usa.gov/xQBaw  or by telephone 24 hours a day on +1 703-313-5900
