CANADA: SPEEDING LIMITS IMPOSED
Published: 29 August 2019
The Government of Canada have introduced temporary speed limits in response to the recent deaths of North Atlantic right whales in the shipping lanes north and south of Anticosti Island. This is in addition to the speed limit of 10 knots which was introduced earlier in the year to much of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. A number of fines have already been imposed for vessels exceeding the speed limits, ranging from CAD6-12,000.
Transport Canada have also increased its surveillance of whale activity and will use the results from its analysis to determine the best practices to protect whales this season. This may include the introduction of further measures.
Members transiting the Gulf of St. Lawrence are advised to contact their local representative in Canada to obtain the latest information on the application and coordinates of the slowdown zones.
