A marine pilot plays a vital role in assisting the master and bridge team to navigate a ship safely to the desired destination. The pilot’s presence on board does not relieve the master or the officer in charge of the watch from their duties and obligations. However, what happens in practice?
Neale Rodrigues, Divisional Direct Loss Prevention, along with Captain John Simpson, Senior Partner, SOLIS Marine, and Captain Richard Barnes, a serving Master Mariner, explore this relationship between master and pilot and, in particular, the sometimes reluctance of masters to question and challenge the pilot’s actions.
