BSAFE Overview

BSAFE OVERVIEW

Published: 12 November 2020

SEAFARERS ARE A KEY PART OF A SUCCESSFUL SHIPPING INDUSTRY. ALTHOUGH CURRENTLY THERE IS MUCH TALK IN THE MEDIA OF A FUTURE WORLD OF AUTONOMOUS SHIPS, ONBOARD CREW REMAIN VITAL TO THE SAFE AND EFFICIENT OPERATION OF OUR MEMBERS’ SHIPS; BOTH NOW AND FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE

At Britannia we recognise the demands and pressures on the men and women who work around the clock at sea, especially in these challenging times. Our Loss Prevention team is made up of experienced maritime professionals with seafaring and operational experience, who understand the reality and practical side of shipping.

IN THE FAST-CHANGING MODERN WORLD, WITH A SEEMINGLY CONSTANT STREAM OF NEW EMERGING RISKS AND RAPID ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGY, THE NEED TO SHARE INFORMATION ABOUT BEST PRACTICES HAS NEVER BEEN GREATER.

At Britannia, we understand this and which is why we have developed our new BSafe campaign.

PROACTIVE

BSafe is a proactive safety campaign targeted at seafarers on board Britannia’s Members’ ships. Developed by our Loss Prevention team, with the support of our People Risks claims department, the aim is to help influence behaviours and prevent onboard injuries and losses.

This is an ongoing campaign and we will be launching new material and specific initiatives as BSafe develops, with the clear aim of supporting seafarers. So, review  these pages regularly and follow us on social media for updates and new content.

INFORMATIVE

By sharing relevant information and developing initiatives to support various aspects of onboard operations, our mission is to help our Members’ crew BSafe. Our aim is not only to provide a home for all our crew-related content and material, but to become recognised as a vital resource for all such information, with relevant, useful and practical content.

SUPPORTIVE

Being safe in its broadest sense is not just about safety. It’s also about being healthy and secure, factors which are fundamental to people’s wellbeing and efficiency. So rather than just focus on pure safety, we have identified three main themes to be covered as part of BSafe: Onboard Safety; Seafarer Health; Onboard Security.

WE BELIEVE THESE ARE THE CORE AREAS OF CONCERN AND RISK FOR MODERN DAY SEAFARERS; THE USE OF THESE THREE PILLARS ARE THE FOUNDATIONS OF BSAFE. ALL THE MATERIAL AND INITIATIVES THAT WILL BE PROVIDED WILL ADDRESS ONE OF THESE THEMES, ALL WITH A BSAFE FOCUS.

REFLECTIVE

Reflecting and learning from previous events is widely acknowledged as an effective way of positively influencing behaviours.

One of the key aims of BSafe will be to encourage seafarers to consider various safety, security and health matters – how these relate to their own company and whether things can be done differently.

In addition to providing a variety of reflective-based content as the campaign evolves, each month we will be producing a new BSafe Incident Case Study, available in our case studies section. These will be based on  real accidents or claims, anonymised as appropriate, and will include specially developed training material to share the key lessons learned and help facilitate reflection.

EFFECTIVE

We are confident that BSafe will develop further and have a significant impact. However, as with any campaign, the true success will be measured by the interaction and feedback we receive from our Members and,  most importantly, their seafarers. We would welcome your suggestions and comments on the campaign, so please contact the Britannia Loss Prevention team via: lossprevention@tindallriley.com

Our aim is simple – to help our Members’ seafarers to be healthy; to be secure; to BSafe.
