BSAFE safety leadership

Safety Leadership

The concept of ‘Safety leadership’ means that the management and senior staff should visibly inspire safe behaviour at all times.  This includes shipboard management, who have a duty to lead by example, and consistently and visibly inspire safe behaviours at all times. This is known as ‘Safety Leadership’

Safety Leadership requires a strong set of skills: the ability to inspire and motivate crew members to ensure that operational pressures do not impact on safety; to lead by example at all times with confidence, authority and empathy; to demonstrate sound knowledge and experience of safety-related matters; to be a good communicator and listener.

The BSafe campaign will be providing content aimed at helping seafarers to understand and develop the necessary skills, with advice on behaviours and examples of best practices to encourage effective Safety Leadership.
